One thing is needed

When we’re worried or anxious, we often try to cover it up. We serve more, strive more in our jobs, homes, and relationships. We make ourselves busy, hoping no one notices what’s really going on inside. But God does.

Jesus saw it in Martha when she served Him as a guest in her home (Luke 10:38-42). While Mary, Martha’s sister, chose to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His words, Martha had taken it upon herself to do all the serving.

But what was really going on in Martha’s heart? She was consumed with so much care and worry that it came out in her frustration towards Mary when she said to Jesus, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, tell her to help me.” (verse 40 NKJV).

Anxiousness has a way of revealing itself. What’s going on inside eventually reveals itself on the outside and usually through frustration towards other people, even towards God.

Clearly Martha had a lot on her mind, as Jesus pointed out in His response to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.” (verse 41).

And Martha had tried to mask her worry and care through being busy, but Jesus saw straight through it. He knew what was really going on in her heart, and He knows what’s going on in your heart too. He sees and knows you.

Now look at Jesus’ response to Martha in verse 42:
“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Jesus was inviting Martha back into relationship with Him, which her sister had chosen from the beginning.

He is inviting you to do the same. Whatever worries or anxiousness you are facing today, Jesus is inviting you to come and sit at His feet. It’s in that place – the secret place with Him – where you will find the restoration and the peace that you need.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 (NKJV)
