Gift Aid FAQs

1. What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a scheme run by the government to give UK charities the opportunity to claim back the tax paid by donors from the money that they have earned.
2. How much can you claim back?
The current rate is 25%. So 25p for every £1 donated.
3. Does it cost me anything more?
No, it is HMRC who pays the extra 25%.
4. Can anyone sign up for Gift Aid?
There are certain requirements in order for you to be eligible to Gift Aid your donations.
You will need to be a UK taxpayer and pay enough income tax and/or capital gains tax that is at least the equal to the amount of Gift Aid submitted by the charities you support.
5. What about VAT, council tax, and other taxes?
These do not count. It is only through income and/or capital gains tax.
6. What happens if I sign up to Gift Aid and I’m not eligible?
If you are paying less income/capital gains tax than the amount claimed back by the charities you support, then it will be your responsibility to pay the difference to HMRC.
7. Can I sign up to Gift Aid with more than one charity?
Yes, you can support as many UK charities as you like, that are using the Gift Aid scheme. 
8. What is the process of signing up?
To sign up to Gift Aid your donations, you will need to fill out a Gift Aid declaration form for each charity you want to support. In this declaration, you confirm that you are a UK taxpayer and that you understand the terms and conditions in claiming Gift Aid on your donations. 
9. Are all my donations eligible for Gift Aid?
Your donations must come out of your own funds. Your donations are not eligible if:
They are made on behalf of someone else or a group of people.
They are made on behalf of a company.
They are made in return for tickets for charity events, auctions, raffles etc.
You or a family member directly benefit from them.
10. I’ve only learned about Gift Aid now, what about all the donations I have made in the past?
We can backdate all of your previous donations to up to 4 years.
