Tondo, located in the slums of Manila, was our third Child Sponsorship location with planned College Sponsorship starting in 2024. It has a population of about 631,000 people, it one of the most densely populated communities on earth with 180,000 inhabitants per square mile. According to the UN, the people living in this area lack adequate water, sanitation, housing, education, and employment opportunities. Many of the families live in tin shacks in the heart of the rubbish dumps, and instead of going to school, children spend their days scavenging through the rubbish in order to find food to eat – scraps from thrown-away rotting food in over 40 degree heat. Many families even try to make a living cleaning and reselling items from the rubbish.
